1960- Starting in 1960, the opportunities of employment in America caught the attention of many non-Americans over the southwest border. This decade was the start of a wave of immigration, bigger than the European one in the beginning of the twentieth century.
1990- The number of immigrants cominginto the Unites States increased, especially in California. Many of these immigrants were illegal and the Department of Homeland Security began building the San Diego Fence. It was the beginning of the United States-Mexico Border Fence.
1996- Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigration Responsibility Act (IIRIRA) was enacted September 30, 1996 . This act addresses border patrol ordering an increase in security measures along the border, and upgrade of equipment. The act's main concern was illegal activities and penalties for alien smuggling among other things.

May 25- Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006 was passed, it increased security along the Mexican border, allowed immigrants to become legal after a period of time, and increased guest workers.
October 26- The Secure Fence Act was passed. This act gave The Department of Homeland Security power to build a 700 mile long fence along the border. It also decreed an increase in border patrol and surveillance equipment.

The Secure Fence act was never complete and as Barack Obama took office in 2008, he promised a Immigration Reform to solve the immigration issue.
2011 Obama stated that the border was "basically complete". The Department of Homeland Security had finished 649 of 652 miles of fencing, which includes almost 300 miles of vehicle barriers and 350 miles of pedestrian fencing.
