Why Cross The Border ?
Immigrants from Mexico
Mexican immigrants have been crossing the southwest border for over 50 years. The problem is that of the 3.7% of illegal immigrants in the U.S, as of 2010, 58% are Mexican. From California to Texas these people have gone across deserts, rivers, walls and/or fences to reach their final destination in America. Essentially these immigrants look for new opportunities to live a better life. |
"When my father came across the border he just wanted to provide a better life for his family, and he brought us here to live that better life." -Eddy Martinez |
Are there benefits to Immigration?
There are various advantages to immigration. All immigrants are said to come looking for more opportunities, the essential "American Dream."
1. Immigrants mainly work in the hospitality, agriculture, construction, and landscaping business. These areas of production would not be the same, especially in the southwest, without the cheap labor from undocumented and non-English speaking immigrants lacking a high school diploma.
2. Cheap labor will then be pursued by the competition to cut costs.
3. Immigrants then begin to earn money that is later sent back to their country. In 2011, immigrants sent over $30 billion to their families back in Mexico and other Latin American countries. This foreign exchange is just as valuable as the oil or tourism business.

These people began the Mexican -American race and their first generations "...laid the foundation for another generation's profound impact on the modern social, cultural, and political landscape of America." No matter the security, Mexican migrants have smuggled themselves through illegally with the use of coyotes, or by simply getting themselves across. Each year, it seems that these immigrants get more clever with their ways of doing so. Not to mention that their persistence keeps many border patrol agents employed.
These people cross over to meet the responsibility of caring for a family, or their responsibility to succeed in their career. Is it not their right to seek a better life?
